It is an absolute disgrace. Foetuses, in practice, do not have equal rights, they have more rights than the mother, as is evidenced again and again with different cases, but particularly so by the unnecessary death of Savita Halappanavar. There should be no legal uncertainty whatsoever, Ireland needs to address this issue very seriously and as soon as possible as we are currently living in the dark ages. The bill that has just been passed is no where near sufficient to deal with all of these issues. The HSE, when money and/or liability is at stake, takes no notice of womens' full human rights during pregnancy, as was evidenced by they trying to force a pregnant women to undergo major surgery earlier this year. They also are ignoring best and evidence based practice by not providing midwifery led care to women who want it and by ignoring the crucial fact that the emotional well being of the mother is essential for the baby's well being. Too many are either standing by or are actively supporting womens' rights being infringed upon again and again in this country which is why the current situation exists. If enough women and men wanted change I believe we'd be able to secure it.Noreen Barronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04398860243786913489noreply@blogger.com
